DeepMind

Founded in 2010, DeepMind Technologies is a globally renowned artificial intelligence company. It was acquired by Google in 2014, and in 2015 it became a subsidiary of Alphabet. They became well known for their groundbreaking work with game-solving reinforcement learning neural networks. In 2016, their AlphaGo system was able to beat Lee Sedol, an 18-times world champion in the game of Go, four games to one. This was seen as a huge breakthrough in AI, which was not foreseen as possible within the next decade.

In the years after, new releases by DeepMind included AlphaZero, a fully self-learning AI for chess, chogi and go, WaveNet, a text-to-speech system used in Google Assistant, and Agent57, a self-learning system that beats human-level performance on all Atari2600 suite games.

Starting from 2016, DeepMind started looking at health care problems, developing fully automated systems for eye disease detection, cancer tissue detection, and more. In parallel, they began spending efforts in the protein folding problem, which has led to the current state of the domain at present, with AlphaFold being the talk of the town.
